the will of 'D' is written in Romaji, which is to say, the letter 'D' as we English would read it. Therefore, the 'Will of D' cannot be something from the English vocabulary. Like, it can't be the Will of Destruction, the Will of Demons, etc.

So I bought a dictionary and looked in everything in the 'D' column (this was a Romaji dictionary, translating Japanese to English) and came across only one thing that would match - Densetsu.

    It means Legend.

In One Piece, a Legend is an unproven myth, such as All Blue. If the will is a will of the Legend, then this could relate to the Ancient weapons, and as Kino mentioned, something to do with the whole pre-One Piece timeline.

Problem with that is a lot of people say 'the will of D' which would sound odd, especially if:

    'the will of will'
    'dearou no dearou'

Which makes you wonder... 'Monkey Will Luffy'? 'Monkey Will Dragon'?

Though Oda probably chose 'D' as the initial to use because it has the same first letter for 'Legend' and 'Will', both of which tie into the series very well.

Dan, read what the poor man wrote. It's written in such a way it can only be part of a japanese word.

Which makes me wonder. Is it japanese De or Di? Or some other letter? Because they don't have a plan D, all consonants must go with vowel, except n. Their whole language is made up of syllables, not of separate letters.

    for example
    se n se i (sensei)
    se n pa i (senpai)
a ma te ra su (amaterasu)
    sa yo na ra (bb)
mo n ki di ru fi (Monkey D. Luffy)

Di, according to how it is said in the anime. But because there is NO hirigana - it is just a letter - a plain 'D' is actually possible. I agree that the language is made up of separate syllables and not letters, but this doesn't actually apply to romaji abbreviations or single letter things like this. If it were a true abbreviation and not actually hiding something, then it would be Di or De.

It's not a japanese word in itself, it's romaji, and is Japanese. It stands for a Japanese word.

Ugh. Japanese can use all english words using similar letters and writing them in Katakana.
Actually descendant would be desendantsu or something, although using it that way would not be normal as they have their own original word for it.

The point was, even in the Japanese manga, it is written as simply 'D'.

Anything starting with 'D' in romaji that fits the context, yes. Hence the use of a dictionary. Go into a bookshop and try it, it doesn't work as well with online dictionaries because they often tend to be search only.
